Here’s how to buy a domain name from GoDaddy.
1.) Click on the image to the right to purchase your domain(s).
2.) Enter the domain(s) name you want to purchase in the field and click “Go.”
3.) Hopefully there’s a checked box after it says, “These names are available … ” for the domain you want. Click “Smart Registration” towards the bottom.
4.) Step 1 is where you need to sign up with GoDaddy if you haven’t already. You can add more years here (see Mara’s note below). Step 2 is something of a gimmick and you don’t need it; choose Standard/Public. (I can make it “private” by taking out your name and address info after the transfer has gone through). Step 3, choose “Using one of my FREE options.” Proceed to Checkout.
5.) Skip through the pages of “Add these domain essentials!” and then click “No thanks.” if you get more offers.
6.) At checkout, make sure only your domains are listed in the cart and not other junk they try to sell you. Do the Verify Code thing. Enter credit card info and you’re done with payment and GoDaddy.
7.) Send the login and password for your new GoDaddy account to me so I can get in there and configure the backend of your website. It’ll take a few days for all to be registered and listed.
You probably already know this, but just on the outside chance that this was another well-kept secret and you hadn’t heard about it either–here it is: I just learned that Google looks to see how many years a website URL is registered for. If it is registered for fewer than 3 years, such as 2 years only Google does not rank that site very high, they “see” that as that URL isn’t going to hang around and the site isn’t committed. Whereas, 5 years or more means higher rankings the next time the site is spidered, which I was told is automatic, once a registration is altered (renewed etc.) I also learned that with “redirects,” in my case both these URL’s I have, would both have to be registred for 5 or more years, not just one of them, which I promptly did, since I was going to anyway…but would have waited, this just sped up the renewal.
Wow!…You probably already knew that tip… right?
No, I didn’t know that and I usually just renew every year, but this is a good reason to renew for 10 years at a time. Thanks for the tip, Mara!
Well I certainly believe that Google will give you a tiny rankings boost for having your domain registered for more than one year out, to say that you won’t get good rankings if it’s only 1 year is nonsense. Besides, it’s one of 100’s of rankings factors.
Most all of my sites and those of my clients only have 1 year or less on their registration. Granted, many of those sites have been around for years, another boost, but even sites a few months old get top 10 or #1 rankings.
I wish I had the money to take all of my domains and give them 5 year renewals. Maybe I’ll try it on a few and see if I notice a difference in search engine rankings. Thanks for the tip.
Go Daddy may be indeed a reliable web host. But selecting a web host depends on your site’s needs. So keep everything in place first.
hi,
just want to ask, if i choose the minimum option for the domain at the subtotal price is $1.19, is it true all I have to pay is $1.19? what about the * mark?
am I able to transfer/point to my NS after i brought it?
please reply, thanks!
Wow, $1.19? Maybe you hit a big sale. Sometimes that’s just the price and lucky you. But be careful, maybe that’s only the price IF you buy something else (like hosting or an SSL certificate). Double check what’s in your shopping cart before you actually pay.
Yes, once you own the domain, GoDaddy makes it easy to change the NS info.
Hope that helps.
Bradley
Thanks Bardley,
this is my shopping cart
